Pilot Light

The Holy Spirit is like a pilot light just waiting to be ignited into a flame.

When we each received the Holy Spirit, our comforter and guide, it is like we had a small pilot light placed inside of each of us. Nothing can take the small, ever-present light away. But if you never do anything to ignite it into a flame, a pilot light can’t do much. We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Spirit appeared like a flame on top of their heads. This small flame empowered them to spread the Gospel message far and wide. The Holy Spirit empowers us with gifts like words of wisdom and knowledge. And who doesn’t want a gift of faith? Then we have gifts of healing, and miracles, as well as prophecy and discernment. So many of us enjoy the gift of our prayer language and speaking in tongues. All this comes from the Holy Spirit. I don’t just want a pilot light dose of the Holy Spirit, I want an all-consuming fire. I want my light to shine in the darkness. He is the light of the world and I want to show that to the world. I will not hide my light under a basket, no! What God has shown me is that to ignite this little pilot light into a flame, I need to practice some spiritual disciplines. Like the discipline of prayer, reading my bible, and loving others. These are the practices that fuel the flame. The Holy Spirit is given to us so we can experience the Father’s love. To be so filled with His love, when we share that love with others, our flame grows brighter. When I spend time in prayer, not asking for Him to do anything, or teach me anything, but simply being with Him. My love for Him grows because I am receiving His love for me. I can’t read my bible to simply check it off my to-do list. I need to soak in it. The stories in the bible can transform my life if I let them, But that doesn’t happen at a quick glance. When I slow my life down to make room for Him, the flame grows brighter. I am being consumed with His love. Life is better when the Holy Spirit is ablaze within me. I am more confident and powerful. I have greater peace. It does require time and commitment, but the pay off is too wonderful to miss.
