God doesn’t want to needlessly dredge up garbage, but sometimes we need to clean things out so we can truly let it go and heal.

God reminded me of a story I heard some time ago. There was a woman who after getting married and having a few kids was given the opportunity to buy the home and property that had once been in her family. After buying the home and moving in she decided to have the old well that her father had put in re-dug and restored. The well had been completely filled in, so she called a company to come in and clean it all out. After a few days, they came to her and said they had reached clean water, and they were done. She went out to the well, looked at the pile, and said, it’s not done. You need to go a little deeper. So the kept digging. Again, they came to her and said it was done. Again she looked at the pile beside the well and said, a little deeper. This happened several times until she came out, looked at the pile, and told them it was done. The well was finally deep enough. The men on the job asked how she knew the well was deep enough now? How had she decided the job was done? She told them that she was just a little girl when the well had first been dug. “Do you see that teapot sitting on top of the pile of dirt and debris? I threw that into the well when my father first dug this well. I figured that the first thing in will be the last thing out.” The same can be said for our spiritual lives. It can take time for God to unearth some of the things we have buried in our hearts. Things that happened so long ago. Things that wounded us so badly we don’t want to think about them. Or events we just don’t understand. Leave them buried, we may think. God doesn’t want to needlessly dredge up garbage, but sometimes we need to clean things out so we can truly let it go and heal. I feel God unearthing things. I’ve been through this sort of thing with God before so I know the freedom that comes with this process. There has been a spirit of rejection in my life for too long. I have dealt with some of the pieces and have some freedom. Now, God wants to go deeper, and together we will get rid of this spirit of rejection, just like we got rid of the spirit of fear.
