Just like a genie like to twist a wish, Satan likes to twist our vows

Sept 13
Do you ever remember making promises to yourself when you were growing up? Things like, I’m never going to do that, or I will always find away. Today God gave me a picture of what is actually happening. We say these promises because we think we will protect ourselves from the mistakes we have seen others, or even ourselves make. We think it will keep us on the path we desire. The problem is they are kind of like making a wish for a genie to grant. Have you ever noticed in the story of a genie in a bottle, the person making the wish, seems to make a reasonable and simple wish, and yet somehow the genie twists it and they get something awful. If you wish for wealth, the genie might simply transfer money from someone else’s account into yours and before you know it, you are charged with grand larceny. You wish for friends, and suddenly so many people are vying for your time it’s overwhelming. How about a safe wish like good health? You said good health, not great right. Or maybe the genie now makes it impossible for you to eat anything, or do anything that might endanger your health.
That is what the enemy does with these promises or vows we make to ourselves. We think these vows are good. I will never be selfish. I will always be a good friend. I will never do to my kids what my dad did to me. I will never… I will always… These are dangerous things. We bound to ourselves things we could never imagine because our motives were pure. We were trying to do the right thing. We were trying to stay on the right path. If you can think of one of those vows you have made, ask God what the actual result was. I have shared several of mine over the last several months. Things like promising to never be selfish and demanding, like my brother. What I got was guilt for receiving good gifts, especially those from my heavenly Father. The beauty is when you recognize the vow, you can break it. In God’s great mercy He will free you from the damaging effects. Jesus came so we could have life and have it more abundantly. Satan is the great deceiver, and he came to kill steal and destroy
